Ford Ranger :
The Ford Ranger is a decent truck for light-duty work needs, but competitors offer more spacious interiors and more refined driving dynamics. For 2006, the Ranger pickup receives revised exterior trim and styling details. Available on both two- and four-door extended cabs this year, the FX4 model now comes with rubber flooring.
Trim levels include XL, STX, XLT, Sport, FX4 and FX4 Level II. Ford's four-cylinder engine is now standard in XL and XLT two-door SuperCab 4x2 models. Three engines are available: a 143-horsepower, 2.3-liter four-cylinder; a 148-hp, 3.0-liter V-6; and a 207-hp, 4.0-liter V-6 that delivers 238 lb-ft of torque. A five-speed-manual gearbox is standard, and a five-speed automatic is optional. Rear- and four-wheel-drive models are offered.
Rangers are pleasant to drive and capable in every significant respect. Each model is attractive, well designed, solidly built and reasonably comfortable inside. At times, the ride can get a bit harsh and choppy, but that is to be expected of a truck. Rangers are quite capable in off-road environments, especially when equipped with one of the FX4 packages.
Inside the Ranger, controls are easy to find and use. Regular-cab Rangers seat two or three occupants on bucket seats or a 60/40-split bench, respectively. SuperCab models can be equipped with a pair of rear jump seats. The seats are acceptably comfortable, particularly with the optional leather upholstery.
The Ford Ranger comes standard with four-wheel antilock brakes. Two-wheel-drive SuperCabs received four stars in frontal- and side-impact crash tests. Regular-cab models earned a five-star side-impact rating.
