The 2006 Ford Five Hundred is a 4-door, 5-passenger family sedan, available in 6 trims, ranging from the SE FWD to the Limited AWD.
Despite being the base model, the SE is fairly well trimmed with standard 6 way power driver's seat, and 17 inch Aluminum wheels. It is equipped with a standard 3.0-liter, V6, 203hp engine that achieves 20-mpg in the city and 27-mpg on the highway. With the SEL, you get an 8 way power seat, Dual Zone climate control, and leather wrapped steering wheel. The Limited AWD is equipped with a standard 3.0-liter, V6, 203hp engine. A variable speed automatic transmission (CVT) with overdrive is standard. Buyers can opt for a six-speed automatic.
The V6 provides adequate power for easy city driving. Power delivery is less refined than in most competitors. Of the two transmissions, the CVT does a better job of keeping the engine in its power band. The 2006 Ford Five Hundred offers a pleasant balance between smooth ride quality and responsive handling. The driving position is higher than usual for a sedan, and provides a good view of the road.
There are a lot of thoughtful touches in the interior. For instance, there is a flip-open compartment on the top center of the dash that is easily reached by the driver and front passenger. The rear seat folds down in a 60/40 split in order to extend the trunk into the rear seat area. .
Safety has not been overlooked on the Five Hundred. For the money, this is a good, practical car.
