Ford Laser :

The Ford Laser has generally been available as a sedan or hatchback. However, convertible, wagon and pick-up versions have also been available in different markets. The Laser was a shining light for Ford during the 20-plus years it was part of the family. The Mazda-based small car was popular from the first model in 1981 right through to the last, which was replaced by the Focus in 2002.

Assembled in Australia, the Laser was different from the Mazda in terms of good dynamics, packaging and pricing. The Laser's final form arrived in 1999 as the KN model, which was replaced by the face-lifted KQ in 2001. Two body styles were offered; the five-door hatchback, and the much more upright four-door sedan. The sedan appealed to an older market, while the hatchback was targeted at youngsters.

There were also two trim levels, the LXi and the GLXi. The base-model Lxi was pretty sparsely equipped. The GLXi added air-conditioning and a better standard of interior trim. The upgrade to KQ specification brought with it a major increase in standard kit, and now the base-model had air-conditioning, an adjustable steering column, central locking, an immobilizer and an improved stereo system.
Power was supplied by a DOHC, 16-valve four-cylinder engine, measuring 1.6 liters in the LXi and 1.8 in the GLXi. Power peaked at 78 kW and 92 kW respectively. Both five-speed manual and four-speed automatic gearboxes were offered.

The Laser offers relatively hassle-free motoring in a package that is not really class leading, but is quiet, comfortable and capable enough.
