Drunk Driving Prevention Tips for Teenagers

Teenagers are extremely susceptible to drunk driving and a number of times this could be because of peer pressure or a need to be accepted by peers. Whatever may be the reason, if you follow some simple precautionary measures, it would go a long way in helping you and your friends from getting into any trouble on account of drunk driving.

The following tips will help you protect your friends and you from falling into the trap of drunk driving after a party.

  • At the start of the party designate drivers who do not drink. Let these drivers drive every one home. It is important that these designated drivers do not drink at all otherwise the entire exercise becomes futile.
  • Do not let friends get into drinking games. Drinking games have a habit of allowing people to consume too many drinks quickly in a short period of time and this can lead to over consumption of alcohol.
  • If a friend does not want to drink, respect his / her wishes. Do not force anyone to drink if they do not want to.
  • Encourage your friends to drink alcoholic drinks in between the alcohol drinks. This will ensure they do not imbibe too many drinks.
  • Do not serve alcohol to a friend who has already consumed too much.
  • Stop serving alcohol at least 90 minutes before the party ends. This will give your friends enough time to process the alcohol.
  • If you think a friend is not sober enough to drive, do not let him / her. Call a taxi to drop them home.

This might be difficult to implement and you may get teased by your friends. However, in the long run they will appreciate your concern and respect you for it. Help your friends and yourself to get safely home after a drinking party is all part of being friends and looking after one another.
