Consequences of Driving After Drinking
Many of us enjoy drinking and there is nothing wrong with having a glass or two. However, the problem occurs when we go overboard with our drinking and then decide to get behind the wheel of a car.
Drinking and driving is extremely dangerous and research has shown that one in seven deaths on the road take place because of a drunk driver. It is true that the more you drink the more likely you will be involved in a road accident if you are driving.
Many people think that if they are within the legal limit of blood alcohol levels then it is okay to drive. However, this is not true. Our judgment gets impaired the moment we drink as we tend to overestimate ourselves. Our ability to judge things are severely hampered due to alcohol and even a single drink will have an effect on our driving ability.
You may not be aware but alcohol gets directly absorbed into the bloodstream after ingestion. The blood laden with alcohol then goes to all the important organs of our body like heart, brain, lungs and liver. These are the same organs that coordinate our activities.
After drinking if you choose to drive then your perceptions will be hampered. You are less likely to notice traffic signals, pedestrians or other cars on the road. Your reactions too would get slowed. It has been observed that after drinking, eyes tend to remain focused on the same object for a longer duration. Your reflexes will be slower after drinking and this means you would take longer to react to situation.
Most people after drinking are not able to drive straight and have difficulty in judging distances and speeds. People tend to be overconfident and invariably end up putting themselves and others in danger.
Alcohol does influence the way we drive and the risk of being involved in an accident increases. The choice is yours whether you want to drink or drive. Think twice before drinking and driving as you are putting yourself and innocent people at risk. |
