What is Drunk Driving?

Drunk driving is also called Driving while Intoxicated (DWI) or Driving under the Influence (DUI). Drunk driving basically has two meanings.

If your blood alcohol level is above the permissible blood alcohol limit is the state then it is drunk driving. In the United States the blood alcohol limit for adults is either 0.08%. All states have adopted this limit after the Congress passed a law in October 2000 requiring all the states to do so. All states have a zero tolerance laws for driving and drinking for drivers under the age of 21.

You are also DUI or DWI if you  drive after taking drugs or combination of drugs and alcohol. This is the case whether the drugs are legal or illegal, prescribed or over the counter. If taking any drugs impairs your ability to drive safely and endangers lives of others or yours, then you are guilty of drunk driving.

In most European countries the legal limit for blood alcohol level is a lot lower than 0.08%. Even if you do not feel drunk or do not look drunk, you can be booked for drunk driving because of the lower blood alcohol limit.

The age group that is responsible for most drunk driving accidents is 21 to 34 year olds and most anti drunk driving campaigns are specially targeting this age group. 43 states and the District of Columbia hold sellers and servers of liquor liable for damages to people and property caused by drunk drivers.
